Frontlit signage refers to any illuminated sign in which the face of the letter or logo is translucent and internally lit, so light passes outward through the face and the whole character glows. The letters themselves are fabricated with a translucent acrylic front, aluminum or steel returns forming the sides, and a solid back panel that houses internal LED modules. The result is a bright, evenly lit character that reads clearly from long viewing distances in both day and night conditions. Frontlit signs are the workhorse of retail signage precisely because they are visible from across a parking lot, down a street, or from a passing car at highway speed.

Fabrication Standards and Materials

The quality of a frontlit sign is decided at fabrication. PrintStack's channel letters are built to specification-grade standards using 3mm or 5mm translucent acrylic faces, powder-coated aluminum returns, and aluminum composite back panels. Every letter is CNC-cut for dimensional precision so that even at large scale the geometry of the typography remains true to the original brand artwork. The seam between face and return is finished with a trim cap — a color-matched extruded plastic edge that provides both a clean visual finish and a light-tight seal that prevents unwanted light leakage.

Face acrylics are available in a broad palette of pre-manufactured translucent colors, and for exact brand-color matching we apply translucent vinyl overlays that hit specific Pantone references. Returns can be powder-coated to any RAL color, and depth is customized to project — typically 60 millimeters to 150 millimeters depending on scale and the desired shadow line. For larger installations we can fabricate letters up to 3 meters tall, delivered in sections and assembled on site.

LED Modules and Illumination Quality

Even, bright illumination without hot spots is the defining quality of a well-built frontlit sign. PrintStack uses high-output SMD LED modules spaced according to the geometry of each individual letter and the depth of the return. Smaller letters use fewer, tighter-spaced modules; larger letters use higher-output modules or dual rows to eliminate any visible variation in brightness across the face. All LEDs are 12V or 24V DC low-voltage, powered by regulated transformers with over-current and short-circuit protection, and rated for a minimum service life of 50,000 hours — approximately eleven years of nightly operation.

Every module we specify carries an IP65 or higher ingress rating, meaning frontlit signs installed outdoors — the majority of our projects — perform reliably in Dubai's demanding climate of intense sun, high summer humidity, and periodic dust and rain. Transformers are installed in weatherproof enclosures out of direct sun, and all wiring is UV-stable and rodent-resistant.

Mounting, Power, and Approvals

Frontlit channel letters are typically mounted in one of two ways. Direct wall mount is the cleanest visual solution, with each letter individually fixed to the fascia and power routed through a single small penetration per letter or per word. Raceway mount groups the letters onto a horizontal aluminum channel that houses all wiring and transformers, then attaches to the fascia with just a handful of anchors — the preferred method for tenanted retail spaces where minimal wall penetration is a landlord requirement.
