Everything You Need to Know About Embroidery Patches

Custom Embroidery Patches in Dubai — Branded Fabric Badges by PrintStack

An embroidered patch carries a sense of permanence and craft that no printed label can match, which is why it remains the standard branding method for uniforms, workwear, and premium apparel across the UAE. Stitched thread does not fade, peel, or crack the way printed logos on fabric eventually can, and a patch reads as a mark of quality and belonging rather than a marketing add-on. PrintStack, a division of Forton General Trading LLC, produces custom embroidery patches for corporate uniforms, hospitality staff wear, security and facilities teams, schools, and promotional merchandise across Dubai and the wider UAE.

How Embroidery Patches Are Made

A patch begins as a digitised embroidery file, where a technician converts your logo artwork into a stitch-by-stitch programme that controls thread direction, density, and colour sequence on an embroidery machine. This digitising step is the technical foundation of a good patch — an experienced digitiser chooses stitch types that suit each element of the logo, using satin stitches for clean edges and lettering, fill stitches for larger solid areas, and running stitches for fine outline detail, so that the finished patch reproduces the logo's proportions and legibility accurately rather than as a rough approximation.

The patch backing fabric, typically a twill or felt base, is stretched onto a stabiliser and stitched by machine, then trimmed to the finished shape either with a laser cutter for precise, clean edges or with a traditional die-cut process for larger volumes. A merrowed edge — a dense overlocked stitch run around the perimeter — is the classic finish for a durable, fray-resistant patch border, while a laser-cut edge gives a cleaner, more modern look, particularly on complex or curved outlines that a merrow border cannot follow as precisely.

Backing and Attachment Methods

How a patch is attached depends entirely on the garment it will go onto and how often it needs to be removed or repositioned. Iron-on backing, a heat-activated adhesive applied to the rear of the patch, allows quick application with a household or commercial iron and suits soft apparel such as polo shirts and jackets, though it is best combined with a few reinforcing stitches for garments that will be washed frequently. Sew-on backing, with no adhesive, is applied entirely by needle and thread and is the most durable and industry-standard method for uniforms that go through repeated commercial laundering, such as hospitality and security workwear. Velcro hook-and-loop backing allows a patch to be removed and swapped, which is standard for military-style, security, and tactical uniforms where role badges or name patches change between shifts or personnel. Adhesive peel-and-stick backing is available for temporary or promotional use on non-fabric surfaces such as bags or hard cases, though it is not recommended for regularly laundered garments.

Thread, Materials, and Colour

We use polyester embroidery thread as standard, chosen for its colour-fastness, sheen, and resistance to fading under repeated washing and UAE sun exposure, with rayon thread available where a higher-sheen, slightly more delicate finish is preferred for lower-wear applications. Metallic thread is available for premium or ceremonial patches, adding gold or silver highlight stitching to crests, emblems, and formal uniform badges. Backing fabric is typically twill for a smooth, formal appearance or felt for a thicker, more traditional patch look; colour is matched from a standard thread chart, and we recommend confirming exact shades against your brand guidelines before production since screen colours and thread colours do not always align precisely.

Sizes and Shapes

Patches are produced in any custom shape and size, from small 3cm circular badges used for name tags and small emblems through to large 15cm or bigger back-of-jacket crests used for outerwear and team wear. Common shapes include circles, shields, ovals, and rectangles, as well as fully custom die-cut outlines that follow the exact silhouette of a logo. Multi-piece designs, where a base patch is layered with a separate applique piece in a contrasting fabric or colour, are used for more elaborate crest-style badges that need a raised, dimensional appearance.

Use Cases Across the UAE

Embroidered patches are standard on hospitality uniforms across Dubai's hotel and restaurant sector, where a stitched crest on a chef's jacket or a front-of-house blazer signals quality in a way printed badges do not. Security companies, facilities management firms, and logistics operators across the UAE use sew-on and Velcro patches for uniform badges, rank insignia, and role identification that must survive daily wear and industrial laundering. Schools and training academies use embroidered crests on blazers and sportswear. Corporate promotional merchandise programmes use smaller iron-on patches on caps, bags, and jackets as a premium alternative to printed logos for limited-edition or executive gifting runs. Motorsport, aviation, and government-affiliated organisations frequently commission detailed multi-colour crest patches for ceremonial and ambassadorial uniforms.

Ordering, MOQ, and Lead Times

Minimum order quantities typically start at 50 pieces per design, since the digitising step is a fixed one-time cost that is best amortised across a reasonable production run; digitising fees are usually waived or discounted on repeat orders using an existing file. Standard lead time is seven to ten working days after digitising and colour approval, which includes producing a stitched sample for sign-off before the full batch is run — an important step, since embroidery colour and stitch density can only be properly judged on an actual stitched sample rather than a digital rendering. Reorders using an already-digitised file are typically faster, often five to seven working days, since the digitising and sampling stages are already complete.

Artwork Guidance

Logos should be supplied as vector files or at minimum high-resolution raster images, since our digitising team works from the outline and colour breakdown of the artwork rather than embroidering a literal pixel reproduction. Fine text below roughly 5mm in height, thin overlapping lines, and subtle colour gradients do not translate well into stitched thread and will be simplified by our digitiser into clean, distinct colour blocks and legible lettering sizes. We recommend limiting a patch design to a maximum of six to eight thread colours to keep both cost and stitch clarity under control, and our team will advise on simplification wherever the original artwork would not embroider cleanly at the intended patch size.

Request a Quotation

If your organisation needs uniform patches, promotional badges, or ceremonial crests, PrintStack's Dubai team can review your logo, recommend the right backing and edge finish for your garment type, and produce a digitised sample before committing to a full production run. Send us your artwork, target quantity, and garment type, and we will return a quotation together with a stitched sample proposal so you can confirm quality before the full order proceeds.
