Everything You Need to Know About Lapel Pins
Custom Lapel Pins in Dubai — Precision Badges by PrintStack
A lapel pin is a small object that carries a disproportionate amount of meaning. Worn on a blazer, uniform, or exhibition lanyard, it signals membership, achievement, or affiliation in a way that a printed badge card never quite manages. PrintStack, a division of Forton General Trading LLC, manufactures custom lapel pins for corporates, government entities, schools, hospitality groups, and event organisers across Dubai and the wider UAE, from single-run VIP pins to ongoing staff recognition programmes numbering in the thousands.
Materials and Base Metals
Lapel pins are produced on a zinc alloy or iron base, plated to the finish specified in the artwork. Gold plating, silver plating, antique brass, antique silver, nickel, black nickel, and copper are all standard finishes, and each changes the character of the pin considerably: gold and antique brass suit heritage and achievement pins, while polished silver and nickel suit corporate and technology branding. Plating thickness affects both appearance and durability, and we specify a plating grade appropriate to how often the pin will be worn and handled — a one-off gala pin has different requirements to a pin issued to every staff member for daily use over years.
Production Techniques
Hard enamel pins are stamped from metal, filled with coloured enamel, then ground flat and polished so the enamel sits level with the metal surface. This produces a smooth, glass-like finish that resists scratching and is the standard choice for corporate and premium pins. Soft enamel pins are stamped and filled in the same way but not ground flat, leaving slightly recessed colour with visible metal ridges between colours — a faster and more economical process that still reads clearly at a distance and suits larger, more colourful designs. Die-struck pins with no enamel fill rely purely on the metal relief and plating for their effect, giving a classic, understated look favoured for long-service and heritage awards. Offset-printed pins allow full-colour, photographic artwork including gradients and fine detail that enamel cannot reproduce, protected under a clear epoxy dome. Soft PVC pins, cast in silicone moulds and hand-painted, suit mascot shapes, irregular outlines, and glow-in-the-dark or colour-changing effects for youth and event-oriented programmes.
Shapes, Sizes, and Attachments
Pins are cut to any custom die shape — your logo outline, a national emblem, a mascot, or a simple circle or shield — with no meaningful design penalty for complexity, since the tooling cost is fixed regardless of run size. Typical sizes range from 15mm for subtle, refined pins to 35mm or larger for bold statement badges; 25mm is the most common general-purpose size. Attachment options include the standard butterfly clutch for everyday wear, a magnetic backing for delicate fabrics that should not be pierced, a safety-pin catch for temporary event badges, and a locking pin back for pins that must not be lost or removed accidentally, such as security passes or high-value award pins.
Use Cases in the UAE
Lapel pins are widely used across the UAE for national day and flag pins distributed by government departments and schools; corporate identity pins issued to staff as part of onboarding and uniform kits; long-service and length-of-service award pins marking five, ten, and twenty-year milestones; conference and exhibition VIP and speaker pins at DWTC and ADNEC; hospitality group pins denoting departments or grades within hotel and airline staff; university and school achievement pins for graduating classes and honour societies; and limited-edition collector pins produced for anniversaries, sporting events, and cultural festivals. Because the format is compact and inexpensive per unit at volume, many clients order a family of pin designs — a base staff pin plus variant pins for management grades or milestone years — under a single ongoing programme rather than a single one-off batch.
Artwork Guidance
Lapel pins reward simplicity. Enamel processes rely on distinct colour fields separated by metal lines, so artwork with fine gradients, thin serif text, or overlapping transparent colours needs to be simplified before it can be manufactured accurately; our design team will produce a pin-ready conversion of your logo at quotation stage and show you exactly how each enamel colour will separate before tooling is cut. Text below roughly 6-7mm cap height becomes difficult to read on a finished pin regardless of process, so we recommend keeping wordmarks to short initials or omitting text from very small pins altogether. For photographic or gradient artwork, offset-printed epoxy-domed pins are the better route than enamel and we will advise which process suits your specific design during the quotation stage rather than after tooling has begun.
Ordering, MOQ, and Lead Times
Custom lapel pins require a one-off mould or die per design, which is why minimum order quantities typically start at 100 pieces for a first run; unit cost falls sharply at 500 and 1,000 pieces, making pins one of the most cost-effective branded items per unit at scale. Because tooling is retained on file after the first order, reorders of the same design carry no repeat tooling charge and can be produced faster and more cheaply than the original run. Standard production is two to three weeks from artwork and mould approval, factoring in mould cutting, sample approval, plating, and enamel curing; rush production is available for smaller runs against a compressed timeline where the client accepts fewer proofing rounds. We always supply a physical pre-production sample for approval before full production begins, since screen colour cannot fully predict how enamel will read against a specific metal plating.
Requesting a Quotation
PrintStack's Dubai studio can guide you from a rough logo file through to a finished, wearable pin, recommending the enamel type, plating finish, size, and attachment that best match how the pin will be worn and how long it needs to last. Share your logo or design brief, the quantity you are considering, and any deadline tied to an event, onboarding cohort, or award ceremony, and our team will return a detailed quotation covering mould development, plating, packaging, and delivery across Dubai and the wider UAE.
